The CARL site is running on WordPress with a learning management system theme. I was really excited by all the features when I first chose it — it had all the features we wanted: structured content, filters, favorites, progress bars, member accounts!

But it’s been a year and we’re not using most of these features. It’s slow to load and confusing to manage. It’s difficult to write content in the modular structure it requires. And worst of all, it has a bad carbon rating 😅

So, we’re changing the theme to something simple and more lightweight and planet-friendly.

To investigate:

  • Are WordPress block templates better than php templates as a rule?
    • Does it matter? This is just an MVP.
  • How do you track changes with the Site Editor?
  • Should I stop thinking that I can do it myself and hire someone or find a volunteer?

  • CARL was featured as a .eco champion! Check them out — they’re carbon-neutral and every .eco domain has pledged to support the global environmental movement.
  • I’m sad to see that Crowdsourcing Sustainability is shutting down. They helped spread the word about CARL a long time ago, and I admire all the work that they’ve done.
  • I’m still playing My Time in Portia & there is so much mining. Why is there so much mining in video games? Is it just a slot machine effect, because we like getting random loot? What would a realistic mining game look like?
