๐ Job searching. I started a new job in January, but things fell through and it turned into a contract assignment. So now, I’m back on the search. I’m open to any type of role that involves project management & coordination, comms production, content development, etc. for a climate-related initiative. If you need a technical generalist who understands the challenges of community-building & advocacy, I can help! I’m open to contract and part-time work as well. Please reach out via LinkedIn.
๐ฝ Participating in pro-democracy groups & actions. I haven’t found a “home base” yet, but so far I like Indivisible Brooklyn. There are many local Indivisible groups if you’re looking for a group to join. Their weekly updates are also a great way to learn about what’s going on & why.
๐ธ Advancing sustainable tech practices through ClimateAction.tech (CAT), an online community of climate-concerned tech workers. Since last year’s post, we have new leaders, content is being published regularly, we’re hosting events, and the moderation guidelines are complete and being implemented! I’m currently focused on developing an Assembly to enable community-led decision-making. Other projects include:
- Reconsider CAT’s position in the climate advocacy space based on external conditions as well as our current membership, which has shifted over the years. Then adjust our theory of change and update our programming and campaigns to fit.
- Introduce more consistency and accountability in the community culture in order to increase impact and engagement.
๐ Reading about social change & thinking about how it relates to identity & personal change. I’m reading Doing Democracy: The MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements, by Bill Moyer. I wish I had read this a long time ago; I wish other activists & advocates would read it too. I think it’s a good starting point for building a stronger movement that is realistic about what it will take to achieve its goals. Other books on my list include:
- Systems Thinking for Social Change, by David Peter Stroh
- Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World, by Anand Giridharadas
- Insolvent: How to Reorient Computing for Just Sustainability, by Christoph Becker (free, open access version)
- Design Justice: Community-Led Practices to Build the Worlds We Need, by Sasha Costanza-Chock
- Team Human, by Douglas Rushkoff
โ๏ธ Writing more & speaking less. There will be more posts this year ๐ค
๐ธ Learning guitar. I will memorize the fretboard one day!
